This photograph pictures Jean Paul Belmondo and Claudia Cardinale starring in La Viaccia (1961) directed by Maruo Bolognini and entitled in English The Lovemakers.

The film tells of the death of a wealthy patriarch and a resulting interfamily power struggle. Son Ferdinando buys out his other relatives in order to gain full control over the dead man's property. But Ferdinando's country-bumpkin nephew Amerigo (Belmondo) holds out. Amerigo's stance is weakened when he heads for the city and meets prostitute Bianca (Cardinale). To support her in the manner in which she is accustomed, Amerigo steals from his uncle. Disgraced in the eyes of his family, Amerigo decides to stay near his beloved Bianca by becoming a bouncer in her brothel.

The photographer Pierluigi Praturlon, (‘Pierluigi’), was one of the most well-known of the original paparazzi and a regular fixture on the Cinecitta film sets. In the past, on-set photographers had contented themselves with posed portraits of stars between takes, but Pierluigi brought a fresh vitality to this genre by employing reportage-style photography on set. He often framed his images very close, emphasizing the drama of the moment. Pierluigi was a very cultured man and also spoke five languages. He quickly became personal photographer to many of the greatest stars of the day, including Sophia Loren. Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Elsa Martinelli and Marlon Brando are also among the stars who chose to be immortalized by the celebrated photographer. Pierluigi soon gained the nickname ‘Lux’ because like the advertisement for the soap claimed, he was ‘the choice of nine stars out of ten.’ Inscribed on reverse: 7
