This image captures director Federico Fellini on the set of his 1963 film 8 ½. The film's title refers to 8½ being Fellini's eighth and a half film as a director and is partly autobiographical of Fellini's own journey to stardom and his relationship with fame.

Federico Fellini is one of the most famous directors of the twentieth century. He was a key figure in the golden era of Italian cinema, when Rome’s Cinecittà became second only to Hollywood for film production. His great masterpieces such as La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8 ½ (1963) became immensely popular in Italy and America and both encapsulated and informed the cultural climate of their day.

This image was taken by photographer Pierluigi. Pierluigi Praturlon, (‘Pierluigi’) was one of the most well- known of the original paparazzi and a regular fixture on the Cinecitta film sets. In the past, on-set photographers had contented themselves with posed portraits of stars between takes, but Pierluigi brought a fresh vitality to this genre by employing reportage- style photography on set. He often framed his images very close, emphasizing the drama of the moment. Pierluigi was a very cultured man and also spoke five languages. He quickly became personal photographer to many of the greatest stars of the day, including Sophia Loren. Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Elsa Martinelli and Marlon Brando are also among the stars who chose to be immortalized by the celebrated photographer. Pierluigi soon gained the nickname ‘Lux’ because like the advertisement for the soap claimed, he was ‘the choice of nine stars out of ten.’
