Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni became world famous after his premier on the Italian and British stage. In 1945, Mastroianni started working for a film company and began taking acting lessons. His first role was in I Miserabili (1948). He soon became a major international celebrity, starring in Big Deal on Madonna Street; and in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita with Anita Ekberg in 1960, where he played a disillusioned and self-loathing tabloid columnist who spends his days and nights exploring Rome's high society. Mastroianni was also famous for his long-term relationship with starlet Sophia Loren. Mastroianni and Loren were one of the most successful and enduring screen couples of cinema history, paired up in 14 movies over twenty years. Pierluigi Praturlon, (‘Pierluigi’), was one of the most well- known of the original paparazzi and a regular fixture on the Cinecitta film sets. In the past, on-set photographers had contented themselves with posed portraits of stars between takes, but Pierluigi brought a fresh vitality to this genre by employing reportage- style photography on set. He often framed his images very close, emphasizing the drama of the moment. Pierluigi was a very cultured man and also spoke five languages. He quickly became personal photographer to many of the greatest stars of the day, including Sophia Loren. Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Elsa Martinelli and Marlon Brando are also among the stars who chose to be immortalized by the celebrated photographer. Pierluigi soon gained the nickname ‘Lux’ because like the advertisement for the soap claimed, he was ‘the choice of nine stars out of ten.’ Stamped on reverse:
