One of the most famous early paparazzi images, this photograph by Marcello Geppetti captures a confrontation between photographer Ivan Crosenco and Richard Burton.

The original paparazzi phtographers would often work in pairs: one would provoke their subject, the other would photograph them. This type of image would fetch very large sums and photographers would also gain a bit of infamy themselves. For this reason, Tazio Secchiaroli used the term 'picture hunters' to describe the group of young photographers in Rome, and he described the scene on the Via Veneto as a 'Theatre of War.'
