This photograph of Sophia Loren by Pierluigi captures a moment on set. Pierlugi became a fixture at many of the Cinecittà sets, capturing both images that could be used as promotional material as well as more intimate behind the scenes portraits, documenting the filmmaking process.

Sophia Loren remains undoubtedly the most famous Italian actress of the Twentieth Century. She is beloved by Italians and Americans alike for her style and sensuality as well as her natural warmth and charm. Sophia Loren came to embody the spirit of a newly capitalist Italy and the economic boom which spawned what is often referred to as the ‘dolce vita’ era.

Loren rose to fame as a comedic actress whose curvaceous figure made her a sex symbol embodying the ideal of Italian femininity. However Loren’s acting abilities and timeless elegance soon sealed her position as an Italian icon, unmatched by any other. In 1960, Loren became the first Italian woman to win an Oscar for her performance in La Ciocciara, directed by Vittorio De Sica.

Pierluigi Praturlon, (‘Pierluigi’) was one of the most well-known of the original paparazzi. In the past, on-set photographers had contented themselves with posed portraits of stars between takes, but Pierluigi brought a fresh vitality to this genre by employing reportage-style photography on set. He often framed his images very close, emphasising the drama of the moment.

Pierluigi was a very cultured man and also spoke five languages. He quickly became personal photographer to many of the greatest stars of the day, including Sophia Loren. Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Elsa Martinelli and Marlon Brando are also among the stars who chose to be immortalized by the celebrated photographer. Pierluigi soon gained the nickname ‘Lux’ because like the soap, he was ‘the choice of nine stars out of ten.’
